Press Club elects new president, board officers and members; recognizes outstanding journalists St. Louis, Mo., Jan. 10, 2007

Alice S. Handelman has been elected to a one-year term as president of the Press Club of Metropolitan St. Louis, effective Jan. 1, 2007. Board elections were held Dec. 13 during the club's 18th annual Media Persons of the Year Awards and Scholarship Dinner at the Sheraton Westport Chalet.

Outgoing President Robert A. Cohn, editor-in-chief emeritus of the St. Louis Jewish Light, will serve as chairman of the club's board of directors. Other officers elected to the Press Club's board of directors are: Marci Rosenberg, media producer, first vice president, and William Greenblatt, United Press International photographer, fourth vice president. In addition, four new members were elected to three-year terms on the Press Club's board.

They are Allison Collinger, director of corporate relations and community outreach for the St. Louis Rams;
Cynthia Frolichstein, an author and journalist;
Ellen Soule, public relations manager of Neiman Marcus; and
Dick Weiss, founder and president of WeissWrite LLC and former St. Louis Post-Dispatch metro editor and writer.

The Press Club, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary, also honored Russ Mitchell, anchor of the "CBS Evening News" weekend editions and anchor of "The Early Show, with the club's first National Journalism Achievement Award at the scholarship dinner. The new award recognizes a native St. Louis media professional whose journalistic accomplishments have led to national media prominence. Charles L. Klotzer and the St. Louis Journalism Review received the club's 2006 Media Persons of the Year for their outstanding contributions to communications excellence. Klotzer is founder and editor/publisher emeritus of the nation's last remaining metropolitan journalism review. Established in 1988, the Media Person of the Year Award recognizes distinguished men and women from the St. Louis media whose exemplary performance established standards of professional conduct and accomplishment. Greenblatt received the club's prestigious Catfish Award for his many contributions to the club as a long-term board member.
Greenblatt's service also includes photographing many club events and co-chairing the 2006 Media Persons of the Year Scholarship Dinner with Rosenberg. The Catfish Award stands for the highest professional standards in the communications field, dedication to the goals of the Press Club and the respect of the board of directors who vote for the recipient.

Handelman assumes presidency of the club after serving four years as first vice president. A graduate of the University of Missouri School of Journalism, Handelman is an award-winning writer and photographer. A public relations consultant, she is the author of "LaSalle Street - The History of the St. Louis Wholesale Flower Market." For 18 years, she was community relations director at the Jewish Center for Aged. She was a feature writer for the St. Louis Blues Hockey Club and the National Hockey League. Handelman chairs the print and public relations selection committees for the St. Louis Media Halls of Fame at the Mercantile Library at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. An active community volunteer, she is past president and chairman of the board of Gateway Elder Services and serves on the executive committee of Women of Achievement. A member of the National Federation of Press Women, Missouri chapter, she has received the Quest Award from the National Federation of Press Women, was honored as a Woman of Achievement and was named a Woman of Worth.
