Missouri Communicators Win National Awards
Eight members of the Missouri Affiliate of the National Federation of Press
Women won 14 awards in this year's national contest. The 2004 competition
drew about 1,000 entries in 66 major categories. To be considered on the
national level, an entry must win first place at the state level.
Kristen Peterson of Frontenac, self-employed photographer, led Missouri
winners in the national event with three firsts, including a rotating subject,
"America the Beautiful," and one second in her field.
An array of first-place awards were named among the other Press Women contest
categories.
Roberta Duyff of Ballwin, a registered dietitian, received first place for
her book, "365 Days of Healthy Eating from the American Dietetic Association,"
and two second-place awards, including an instructional nutrition book.
Linda Matz Mantle of University City, executive editor of St. Louis Jewish
Light, received first place and third place for newspaper-related publications.

Other Missouri members receiving top category awards in the national contest
were: Janice Denham of Kirkwood, for the Suburban Journals' food section;
Joan Gilbert of Hallsville, for a chapter of poetry in New Ground literary
magazine; Kathie Sutin of Olivette, for sports and leisure articles in the
St. Louis Post-Dispatch newspaper, and Joan Thomas of St. Louis, for research
into the "Field of Dreams Mystique."
Tresa McBee of Springfield captured second place for personality profiles
Awards will be presented Sept. 11 at the NFPW Communications Conference
in Lexington, Ky. she wrote for the Springfield News-Leader newspaper.
