Media Hall of Fame Inducts 35 Media Professionals

Tom Eschen, Bob Costas and Alice S. Handelman Bob Costas (center) is welcomed into the inaugural television hall of fame, by Tom Eschen, vice chancellor, University Development, University of Missouri St Louis and Alice S. Handelman, vice president, Press Club of Metropolitan St. Louis and a member of National Federation of Press Women, St. Louis section. Handelman serves on the Advisory Board of the Media Halls of Fame.

The television hall is one of the three Media Halls of Fame at St. Louis Mercantile Library at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. The event, which honored 35 media professionals by inducting them into the Media Halls of Fame, was emceed by KSDK (Channel 5) sportscaster Frank Cusumano. It was was held at the Renaissance Grand Hotel on June 10 where Handelman presented the 12 Print Hall of Fame inductees. Costas has been on the air for the NBC network since the early 1980s. Prior to joining NBC, he was a play-by-play announcer for the Spirits of St. Louis of the American Basketball Association, worked at KMOX Radio and was briefly employed by the CBS network. Tom Eschen and Frank Absher, adjunct professor of communications at St. Louis Univesity and local radio historian, worked together to merge the newly created television and print halls with the existing St. Louis Radio Hall of Fame. 

“Current Issues in Media Law” was the topic for the May 24th forum co-sponsored by the Bar Association of Metropolitan St. Louis.  A panel presentation focusing on subpoenas to media; attempts to prosecute the media; and issues of access to government information featured Benjamin Lipman, member, Lewis, Rice & Fingersh, L.C.;
Sylvester Brown,  columnist, St. Louis Post-Dispatch; and S. Richard Gard, Jr.,  president and publisher of Legal  Communication Corp.  The luncheon, held atop the Laclede Gas Building in the Lawyer’s Club dining room, was well attended by Press Club and Bar Association members.        

R. J. Matson, editorial cartoonist for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, was the Press Club’s special guest at our April 27th “happy hour” gathering at C.J. Muggs.  Matson shared stories and answered questions about his career and experiences in an informal and conversational setting.  (Photo) Members had a hearty laugh as he showed the cartoon he created during the Clinton sex scandal. 

“The State of Radio Today” forum  March 30th at Webster University’s library drew a capacity crowd of members and communication students. Frank Absher, (standing) St. Louis radio historian, columnist, and journalism instructor, moderated a lively discussion between panelists, Bernie Hayes, Webster communications instructor and author of Death of Black Radio, Dave Ervin, vice president and general manager of KMOX Radio; Mike Anderson, former St. Louis radio personality and performer and editor/publisher of STLMedia website; and Annette Bevel, general manager of WILY/WRXX.   

An audience of over 70 met at Schlafly’s Tap Room for the February forum,  “The Rebirth of the Other Downtown”,  co-sponsored by the Press Club and the Locust  Business District(LBD).  Insights on the latest development, renovation  and preservation efforts in the Locust business and loft district, which links downtown, St. Louis University, Harris-Stowe University and Grand Center were given. Pictured are panelists: (left to right) Michael McMillan, alderman, St. Louis City; Julius Hunter, vice president of communications for St. Louis University;  Bob Cohn, Press Club president; and Jassen Johnson, commissioner, Locust Business District.  The reopening of Locust as a two-way street was announced at the event. 


Dr. John J. Pauly Honored with President’s Award
Board member Dr. John J. Pauly receives the President’s Award from Bob Cohn at the June Press Club board meeting for his many years of service to the club and outstanding contributions to media communication in the St. Louis metropolitan area. 
Pauly, a communications professor at St. Louis University is moving to Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin where he will be dean of the J. William and Mary Diederich College of Communication and the William R. Burleigh and E. W. Scripps Professor.   Pauly will be responsible for the academic and administrative leadership of the college, which will benefit in the coming years from a gift of $28 million from alumni J. William and Mary Diederich. The gift, announced in May, will assist in positioning the college as a national leader in scholarly research, creative work, outreach and teaching as it prepares students for communication in the 21st century.
